Here are some steps we recommend following for the absolute best results;

Step 1: Find out what skin type you are

Here at Jecca Blac, we love to celebrate you! Our mission is to be a brand that represents all beauty lovers: all expressions, genders, sexualities, abilities, pronouns, shapes and sizes. Everyone's skin is different and requires different treatments in order to keep it healthy!

Before you start any makeup look, you should ask yourself some simple questions about your skin and what the desired end look you have in mind looks like! Deciding on what type of skin you have will then help to inform some of your choices, i.e. which primer would be best suited for the look you are after.

Step 2: Moisturise and prime the skin!

Once reason for thinking about what look you want to create and what type of skin you have enables you to answer some of the questions about which products you may need to use.

For example, knowing if your skin is oily, dry or normal will dictate which priming and moisturising products you should be using.

We have a selection of primers which cater to all desired skin finishes. Our Primers are ideal for maintaining moisture in the skin and providing the perfect base for skin prep and beard shadow coverage. If you’re still unsure on what primer you should be using for your look, check out our useful infographic below;

Hydrate Primer - is formulated with Shea Butter and Aloe Juice - both of which are amazing for boosting your skin's natural radiance, while locking in moisture all day long. Hydrated skin is an essential step in any makeup regime, as a silky smooth base will result in silky smooth makeup application.

Blur & Matte Primer - feel free to use after our Hydrate Primer, or apply following your usual morning skincare if you already have a favourite day to day moisturiser. Blur & Matte is perfect for male to female makeup transformations as it blurs the skin's texture, including pores, fine lines and - most importantly - beard shadow. This makes it ideal for long wearing, full coverage looks.

Glow Drops Primer - again, you can use these after using our Hydrate Primer, if you’re looking for a lighter coverage of primer, that’ll help to make your skin glow! We have these available in both Rose Pearl and Champagne. If you’re looking for a more subtle, shimmer finish then we’d recommend you use Rose Pearl, but if you’re looking for a bold, glittery statement, you should definitely opt for our Champagne Glow Drops!

Once your skin is prepped and primed, you can begin working with your base!

Step 3 - Conceal Beard Shadow

Our Correct & Conceal Palette was created as a simple & effective two step concealer solution for beard shadow. It can be applied to brighten and colour correct areas such as the under eyes and any beard shadow. The 'Colour Corrector' part of the Palette has a peachy tone, which neutralises and brightens any areas of darkness which have a darker/blue undertone in the skin.

One of the best ways to understand the process behind colour correction, is to think of the colour wheel. As you can see from the example below, the orange and pink colours are opposites to the blues and the greens, which are the colours that help to make up the undertones of your shadows. When you use the orange and the pinks on your skin, it helps to cancel out these blue shades and to make the skin appear more flawless.

With our Correct & Conceal Palette, the colour correctors range from a pinky peach, to an orange peach colour, depending on which shade you are. Use these on any areas where you are concerned about the colour of your skin, i.e. under your eyes or on your jawline. This product was designed to be layered, so make sure you apply thinly until you can see the colour has been corrected. If you’re finding that the colour isn’t corrected as much as you’d like, you can always powder over what you have done and apply a second layer, providing you with some extra coverage.

Following this, you can use the 'Concealer' part of our Correct & Conceal Palette. It was designed to be layered over the top of the 'Colour Corrector' and as it has a cream based consistency is super blendable, with a natural, skin like finish. This can also be applied over any areas of redness as a result of acne or scarring. We would recommend that this is applied with either your finger or a brush, but that it is blended using an egg-shaped, damp makeup sponge.

Top TIP: If you wet your egg-shaped makeup sponge, you will allow for better blending of your products. If you try to use the sponge dry, it’ll soak up some of the concealer that you have placed and make your blending look patchy.

Step 4: Powdering your face

As shown in the video below, beard shadow coverage needs to be set with a transluscent setting powder. This will stop your concealer moving throughout the day, and will provide a better base for any products which follow. If you’re looking for some extra coverage from your routine, we’d recommend getting an actual foundation powder that matches your skin tone.

We’d recommend adding the powder with a big, fluffy brush, and lightly brushing the powder over areas that you have applied corrector and concealer to. There are many different advantages to using a face powder, including;

  • Powder helps to absorb excess oils from your face, preventing them from ruining your makeup and making it last longer!
  • This also means that your face looks less shiny, especially in front of a camera and flash.
  • It helps to even out your skin tone, making it appear smoother.
  • They are the perfect base for adding in extra powder products, i.e. bronzer and blushes.

Step 5: Contour and Bronzing

The final part of your base makeup will be any contouring and bronzing that you want to complete. Some people may not want to contour or feel that they need to, but for others they can feel that their face and makeup may look a bit flat and one-dimensional without any contour.

If you'd like to get into contouring to soften features, we've made this easy with our Sculpt & Soften Palette which contains a free 34 page guide to help you tailor your contouring routine to your own features and desired result. The guide details the very basics of contouring and gives you some tips and tricks on how best to contour your features to suit the look you have envisioned. Feel free to skip contouring in exchange for subtly bronzing the skin, which can be achieved with the 'Sculpt' shade alone from our Sculpt & Soften Palette. Adding in warmth to the face with a bronzer can help to make certain features appear smaller and less pronounced, whilst giving the face some dimension and depth.

Step 6: Adding colour to the face

Again, this step depends on the look in which you are striving to achieve and some of the questions that you asked yourself at the beginning of this tutorial. Applying blush to your face, along with some colour to your eyes, can really bring the look together and make certain features pop!

When it comes to applying blush, again, it is so important to look at your own face and try and figure out a placement that suits you. Some people add blush to the end of their nose in an effort to try and make it appear smaller and more button-like, whilst others prefer to keep their blush high on their cheeks to give the appearance of fuller cheeks.

This is made simple with our Play Pots. Cream based pigments for the eyes, cheeks and lips, apply with a brush or your fingertips for cream eyeshadow, blush or lip tint to warm up the face! Choose a colour that you feel expresses your personality - for day to day wear, two of our favourites are shades Red Touch and Pink Pearl.If you’re looking for a more glamorous and glittery look, Gold Touch works perfectly!

You can add a small amount of the cream pigment to your cheek with a brush or your fingers, and then blend this out with a fluffy brush.

Step 7: The Eyes

As we mentioned, our Play Pots can also be used to add colour to the eyes. As they are cream pigments, we find the best way to use these is to place the product onto your desired area with your fingers, and then blending it out with a fluffy eye brush.

Curling your eyelashes also helps to make you look more awake and alert, and we would definitely recommend doing this, especially if you are looking to put on false eyelashes. Also, you’ll want to apply either a Dark Brown or Black mascara onto your eyes. If you’re hoping for a subtle lash look, we’d recommend using a lengthening mascara.

If you would like, you can also add false eyelashes, which can be applied using a pair of tweezers and some eyelash glue. Trimming the eyelashes is a great way of making sure they look more natural too. You only need a small amount of the glue and we’d recommend leaving it to sit on the eyelash for around 30 seconds before applying the eyelash to your face, to ensure the glue is tacky when it touches your eyelid. Try and place the eyelashes just above your lash line, which can then be disguised when you are applying your eyeliner.

Then, take an eyebrow shadow which matches your natural eyebrow colour, and outline the edges of your eyebrows, using a fine angled brush. Once you’ve done this, use small, horizontal strokes to mimic eyebrow hairs in order to fill out any sparse areas and make your eyebrows more uniformed! This will give the appearance that your eyebrows are more full and will help to make them look more symmetrical.

Step 8 - Finishing Touches

The final thing you should do before completing your look is to set the makeup in place, which will help it to last longer throughout the day. You can do this in two ways, depending on the look you are aiming for. You can either add some more powder onto your face with a large, fluffy brush and dust this over your face.

However, we would recommend using a setting spray, to help give your face some hydration, whilst also locking your makeup into place. Using a setting spray helps some of the layers of products that you have used to melt into one another, and become less cakey.

We’d also recommend putting some lipstick in your bag, for you to top up throughout the day as and when you need.
